En este post vamos a hablar de una empresa muy popular de dados y de nuestras experiencias con ella. Esta marca se llama Chessex, con sede en Fort Wayne (Condado de Allen en Indiana, Estados Unidos). Esta es una de las más grandes distribuidoras de dados para juegos del mundo, desde 1987 han mejorado sus productos hasta ser hoy día una de las más importantes del sector.
In this post we are going to talk about a very popular dice company and our experiences with it. This brand is called Chessex, based in Fort Wayne (Allen County, Indiana, USA). This is one of the largest distributors of gaming dice in the world, since 1987 they have improved their products to be today one of the most important in the industry.
Custom Dice for Warhammer
Hay muchas tiendas y marcas que hacen dados customizados o personalizados. Por ejemplo, en España se encuentra Mokko de la que hablaremos en otro post. Los dados personalizados son más caros que los normales, ya que podemos cambiar la cara que queramos por un símbolo o icono que nos guste. Por ello, estos dados son como joyas para los jugadores más exigentes y que les gusta tener material de juego exclusivo y original.
There are many stores and brands that make customized or personalized dice. For example, in Spain there is Mokko, which we will talk about in another post. Customized dice are more expensive than the normal ones, since we can change the face we want for a symbol or icon we like. Therefore, these dice are like jewels for the most demanding players who like to have exclusive and original game material.
How make an order of custom dice for warhammer or D&D? Chessex
Vamos a contar nuestra experiencia con la marca Chessex. En total hemos hecho 3 pedidos a lo largo de los últimos 8 años, de los cuales en todos hemos salido muy contentos. Si estás buscando un set de dados personalizados, recomendamos antes buscar por internet, ebay o etsy si ya existen, ya que comprar dados comerciales saldrán más baratos que hacerlos custom.
We are going to tell our experience with the Chessex brand. In total we have placed 3 orders over the last 8 years, and we have been very happy with all of them. If you are looking for a custom dice set, we recommend you to search the internet, ebay or etsy if they already exist, because buying commercial dice will be cheaper than making them custom.
1. Prepare your project
Lo primero que tienes que hacer es buscar qué tipo de dado quieres, cuantos necesitas, qué colores y el icono que quieres ponerle. Es importante todo esto antes de ponerse en contacto con la empresa, ya que no debes marearlos siendo indeciso. En nuestro caso, en el primer proyecto, queríamos 26 dados rojos para warhammer 40K Inquisición y Caballeros grises. En particular buscabamos los Scarab Scarlet w Gold.
The first thing you have to do is to find out what kind of dice you want, how many you need, what colors and the icon you want to put on it. It is important to do all this before contacting the company, as you should not make them dizzy by being indecisive. In our case, in the first project, we wanted 26 red dice for warhammer 40K Inquisition and Grey Knights. We liked Scarab Scarlet w Gold model.
2. Design your icon for the dice
Si no tienes maña con programas de diseño, recomendamos que busques en Google. Por ejemplo, si pones: Icon Inquisition Warhammer, o Symbol Warhammer encontrarás el que hemos seleccionado nosotros. Tiene que tener buena resolución. Hay miles de diseños, por lo que puedes escoger el que más te guste mientras sea de un solo color.
If you are not handy with design programs, we recommend that you search in Google. For example, if you type: Icon Inquisition Warhammer, you will find the one we have selected. It must have a good resolution. There are thousands of designs, so you can choose the one you like as long as it is in one color.
3. Contact with Chessex
El email de contacto es custom@chessex.com. En el email tendremos que poner qué tamaño y tipo de dado queremos (12mm/16mm o D6, D12, D20), en qué cara queremos el dibujo y qué dibujo es. Entonces, ellos nos dirán cuales son los modelos disponibles, ya que NO todos los modelos de su tienda pueden customizarse, y estos dependerán del stock, por lo que tienes que adaptarte a los que tengan en ese momento. (Nosotros tuvimos suerte con el modelo Scarab Scarlet w Gold, que siempre suelen tener en stock)
The contact email is custom@chessex.com. In the email we will have to put what size and type of dice we want (12mm/16mm or D6, D12, D20), on which side we want the drawing and what drawing it is. Then, they will tell us which are the available models, since NOT all the models in their store can be customized, and these will depend on the stock, so you have to adapt to the ones they have at that moment. (We were lucky with the Scarab Scarlet w Gold model, which they always have in stock).
4. Check the Sample
Tras confirmar el tipo de dado y en qué cara queremos el dibujo, nos harán un dado de prueba y nos enseñarán fotos del mismo. Si está todo correcto y nos gusta el resultado, deberemos proceder al pago. Chessex en este aspecto es MUY profesional y son muy rápidos en atendernos. En este caso fueron dados de 16mm, que son un tamaño generoso.
After confirming the type of dice and on which side we want the drawing, they will make us a test dice and show us pictures of it. If everything is correct and we like the result, we will proceed to payment. Chessex in this aspect is VERY professional and they are very quick to assist us. In this case they were 16mm dice, which are a generous size.
5. Payment and shipping
A nosotros, en este pedido que se hizo en 2014, nos costaron 0.75$ cada dado + 24$ de gastos de envío a España, por lo que en total fueron aproximadamente 40€ los 26 dados. Pero además, a esto hay que añadirle los gastos aduaneros, que pueden oscilar entre los 20-40€ adicionales para el envío a España… En total, el capricho de los dados customizados son unos 60€ en 2014. El pago se hizo por Paypal. En una semana ya tenían listo el pedido y tan solo tardó en llegar 2 días, por DHL Express.
To us, in this order that was made in 2014, they cost us 0.75$ each dice + 24$ shipping costs to Spain, so in total it was approximately 40€ for the 26 dice. But in addition, to this we have to add the customs charges, which can range between 20-40€ extra for shipping to Spain…. In total, the custom dice whim is about 60€ in 2014. The payment was made by Paypal. In a week they had the order ready and it only took 2 days to arrive, by DHL Express.

En 2016 hicimos otro pedido, esta vez era para un ejército de Warhammer Fantasy Skaven (ahora Age of Sigmar). En nuestra opinión, es MUY importante que el dibujo esté en el lado del 6″. En estos dados y el pedido anterior, el dibujo se puso en el lado del 1″ y al ser un número relacionado con fallos y pifias… al final se les acaba cogiendo mucho odio a la rato cornuda!
El precio de los dados varía según su tamaño, número de caras, cantidad del pedido y tipo de dado. Por ejemplo, un dado de 6 caras, como los de la inquisición anteriores, con un dibujo en cada cara, nos habría costado 6$ por unidad, por lo que decidimos únicamente poner el dibujo en una única cara.
In 2016 we placed another order, this time it was for a Warhammer Fantasy Skaven (now Age of Sigmar) army. In our opinion, it is VERY important that the drawing be on the 6″ side. In these dice and the previous order, the drawing was put on the 1″ side and being a number related to fails… in the end you end up catching a lot of hatred for the great horned Rat!
The price of the dice varies according to their size, number of faces, order quantity and type of dice. For example, a 6-sided dice, like the previous Inquisition dice, with a drawing on each side, would have cost us $6 per unit, so we decided to only put the drawing on one side.
Dices Custom for Warhammer Lord of the Ring
El último pedido que hicimos fue en 2020, para un ejército de Legión de Azog, Poderes oscuros de Dol Guldur y Cazadores de Azog. Los modelos fueron sacados también de internet. Esta vez el precio fue mayor, ya que en aduanas nos cobraron 35€, que unido a los 24$ de envío… salió más caro el collar que el perro. Aún así, estamos muy contentos con el resultado.
The last order we placed was in 2020, for an army of Legion of Azog, Dark Powers of Dol Guldur and Hunters of Azog. The models were also taken from the internet. This time the price was higher, as they charged us 35€ in customs, which together with the 24$ shipping… the leash was more expensive than the dog. Even so, we are very happy with the result.
Conclusion and opinions | Opiniones de los dados personalizados Chessex
No son los más baratos del mercado (de hecho diríamos que son de los más caros actualmente) sin embargo, tienen un amplio catálogo de dados muy originales. Tendremos que preguntar por el stock, ya que como hemos dicho, no siempre tienen todos los modelos disponibles, por lo que tendremos que adaptarnos. En nuestra opinión, son los dados de mayor calidad que vamos a encontrar, eso sí, la calidad hay que pagarla. Si eres un jugador asiduo de un ejército en concreto y quieres darte un capricho, Chessex es una buena opción para hacer los dados a gusto, con una calidad alta, servicio rápido y atención al cliente profesional.
Por desgracia, los gastos de envío son muy altos junto a aduana… lo que hace que pedir a Chessex sea un capricho muy caro para momentos especiales. Una alternativa interesante si eres Español son la marca Mokko de la que hablaremos más adelante.
They are not the cheapest on the market (in fact we would say that they are among the most expensive currently) however, they have a wide catalog of very original dice. We will have to ask about the stock, since as we have said, they do not always have all the models available, so we will have to adapt. In our opinion, these are the highest quality dice you will find, but you have to pay for quality. If you are a regular player of a particular army and want to treat yourself, Chessex is a good option to make the dice to your liking, with high quality, fast service and professional customer service. Unfortunately, shipping costs are very high along with customs… which makes ordering from Chessex a very expensive treat for special moments.
